## What it does
- **Encrypted before it leaves your Mac** — Everything is encrypted on your machine before upload. Nobody but you can read your data — not even the storage provider.
- **Stored in the EU** — Your backups live in Scaleway object storage in Paris, Amsterdam, or Warsaw. Your bucket, your keys, your data.
- **Set-and-forget scheduling** — Hourly to daily, battery-aware, and running even when the menu bar app is closed. Catches up after sleep and waits out offline periods on its own.
- **Restore anything, anywhere** — Browse snapshots like folders and restore single files or whole directories — with sensible conflict handling when files already exist.
- **Backups you can trust** — Automatic integrity checks verify your backups are actually restorable. When something goes wrong, you get a plain-language reason — never a raw error dump.
- **No lock-in** — Backups use the standard restic repository format. The open-source restic CLI can read your data forever, with or without Vigilans.

## How it works
1. **Connect your bucket** — Point Vigilans at your own Scaleway object storage bucket — the setup guide walks you through creating one in about two minutes. Your encryption password stays in your Mac’s Keychain and never leaves your machine.
2. **Choose what to back up** — By default Vigilans protects your entire home folder minus the noise — caches, trash, node_modules, VM images. Fine-tune the scope anytime from Preferences.
3. **Protected** — That’s it. Your first backup starts right away, and from then on Vigilans backs up on schedule, checks integrity, and shows its status in the menu bar. You only hear from it when something needs you.

Every backup is a snapshot you can open like a folder. Pick a point in time in the sidebar, tick the files or folders you need, and restore them to their original place or anywhere else.

## FAQ
### Where is my data stored, and who can read it?
Your backups are stored in your own Scaleway object storage bucket in the EU (Paris, Amsterdam, or Warsaw). Everything is encrypted on your Mac before upload with a password only you hold — neither Scaleway nor we can read your files.

### Do I need my own Scaleway account?
Yes. Vigilans backs up to a bucket you own: you create a Scaleway account, and Vigilans walks you through connecting it during setup. You pay Scaleway directly for storage (typically a few cents per GB per month), so your data never depends on our servers.

### What happens if I stop using Vigilans?
Nothing is held hostage. Backups use the standard restic repository format, so the free, open-source restic command-line tool can list, verify, and restore everything in your bucket — forever, on any platform.

### Does it back up while my Mac is asleep or offline?
Vigilans runs a lightweight background agent, so scheduled backups happen even when the menu bar app is closed. If your Mac is asleep or offline at backup time, it catches up automatically as soon as it can — and it avoids heavy work while you are on battery.

### How do I restore files — or move to a new Mac?
Open the restore window, browse any snapshot like a folder, and restore single files or entire directories to wherever you choose. On a new Mac, install Vigilans, connect the same bucket with your encryption password, and restore from your latest snapshot.

### How much will it cost?
Pricing isn’t final yet — but one thing is: Vigilans will be a one-time purchase with a perpetual license. No subscription, ever. Storage is separate and paid directly to Scaleway (typically a few cents per GB per month).

### What macOS versions are supported?
Vigilans requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and runs on Apple Silicon Macs only. There is no Intel build.

### What languages does it speak?
Vigilans is fully localized in English and German, including accessibility labels and Dynamic Type support.

### What does Vigilans send over the network?
Your encrypted backup data goes to your own bucket, and the app checks for updates — that is all. There is no telemetry, no analytics, and no account with us.
